.....................The Last Lap
Haven't been blogging much as I've been writing. In September I decided to write a novella. I had absolute confidence it would take six months (max), because it was an uncomplicated story set over a short space of time. Ha! (Bitter laughter at my own innocence.)
Ten months later I'm editing the last chapter of a novel. It's like being stuck in a relationship I'd planned to end months ago. I need to move on. It's over. Except the nearer I get to "The End" the slower my progress becomes...like one of those sentimental moments in the movies when the hero is nearing the finishing line and everything goes in slow motion.
My mantra (stolen) is to "write without hope, and without despair" and I'm getting there. An awful lot of what I wrote in the early stages has been abandoned as the story that wanted to be told emerged, characters I'd spent a lot of time describing were binned (sorry baby Mary!) to allow for this. The process of writing the novel actually became the process of finding out which novel I was going to write. I've learnt not to get too attached to the first draft or too committed to word counting. Otherwise you can be tempted to manipulate a story to fit your early writing when it really wants to gallop off in a different direction. Next time I won't be so precious about the first three or four chapters because they were really just a process of warming up and getting into the story.
Did I just say next time?

Eigse Poetry Workshop
I presume this means the participants read their work during the festival in June. Its very reasonably priced for a workshop with such an experienced writer, so needless to say, I've booked myself in.
Rita Kelly's publications include five collections of poetry, the latest being Turas go bun na Spéire from Cló IarChonnachta, 2009 with a new English poetry collection due for release in 2011. Her work has earned various awards, most recently the prestigious Patrick & Kathleen Kavanagh Memorial Award.
Kildare Readers Festival
John Connolly and Stuart Neville were fantastic on Saturday night, both very talented and generous writers. What I didn't know about John Connolly was how funny he is, will write a post about the talk soon, it was very informative, witty and especially relevant to writers. (Thanks to the organisers of the Kildare Readers Festival!) There was a substantial queue to get books signed after the event so we were given little post-its to write out the dedication and make it easier for the author at the other end. I imaginatively wrote "Niamh", and stuck it to my copy of "The Whisperers." My sister, on the other hand, wrote, "To Olivia, My inspiration." An amused(?) John Connolly was very genial and wrote the dedication, "To Olivia, my inspiration. Sure what would I do without you?"

WOW Anthology Launch
(courtesy of Michael Farry)
Congratulations to everyone! It's always nice to chat to other writers, it was only a week since the Hennessy Awards where James Lawless, Michael Massey, Alison Wells and myself had met under similar circumstances. Last night was a more relaxed celebration, with lots of champagne (which is very... relaxing) and both Michael and James were award winners! James's novel, The Avenue, will be launched at The Irish Writers Centre on the 6th May. Michael Farry, poet and editor of Boyne Berries Magazine was also shortlisted, as was Maire T Robinson who is a member of the Atlantis Collective and a graduate of the MA in Writing from NUI.
I started to read the anthology on the drive home... Tony O' Dwyer and Geraldine Burke (Wordsonthestreet) have produced a wonderful magazine and for an emerging writer, publications such as this are vital. I dare you to read Moya Roddy's excellant `Butterflies` and not be disturbed.
Having lived in Galway for 14 yrs it was wonderful to be back for the night, catching up with some good friends who I hadn't seen in a long, long time. One of my highlights, as always, was getting to Charlie Byrnes Bookshop - where I bought Ropes 18, Painting Rain by Paula Meehan and Red Riding Hood's Dilemma by Orfhlaith Foyle... Heaven!
WATCH OUT! BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
Paddy Smith kindly let me know about the up coming Battle of the Books at the Trim Swift Festival (July 1-4) ;
"We use 'the Simon Cowell approach' in the annual Battle of the Books between the Boyne Writers Group and the Meath Writers Circle. Teams of 4 from each group read their satirical writing pieces (poetry and prose) in front of an audience and then submit to robust comments from a panel of 3 judges. Hair-raising stuff -- and not for the faint-hearted! Boyne Writers won it last year by one mark (94-93) and the return match this year is being eagerly awaited."
